7 Tips On How To Make Guest Blogging Work For You

Guest Posting
Guest blogging, while it normally doesn't pay cash, gives you great returns in terms of SEO benefits and reputation as an author. You get a larger audience than you would from your own blog alone, and you get backlinks from high authority blogs (where you posted) to boost your own ranking. As with most everything else, you've got to know the tricks of the trade to make guest blogging work for you.

Here are 7 tips that you could begin with:

1. The Google gossip

Word is, Google is going to devalue links in the author bio. Since you can't argue with the Big G, it makes sense to somehow insert your link in the article body instead. This is easier said than done because blogs that accept guest posts have their own rules. Create a good portfolio (even if you have never published before) and write a great pitch. Comment on other posts on the blog and, in short, make yourself a known figure. Then, and only then, ask for favors like link in the article body, and you could be pleasantly surprised.

2. Where does the link lead to?

This is weird: very few guest bloggers think of leading visitors to a landing page let alone one that is specialized to suit visitors from the parent site where the guest article was posted. Linking to your home page may guarantee a certain percentage of visitors, but it normally does nothing to convert them to subscribers as well.

Consider this: you are writing Article A on Site B. Create a landing page that says something like "Hi there! You just read A on B, didn't ya? Well, welcome to my site..." and put in the subscription form along with a freebie to "thank" your visitors for reading your article. Regarding the freebie (gift, actually), say something like "Tell us where to send it" and you'll have quite a few emails already.

3. How do you link?

Anchor texts are fine; ones with keywords are great; catchy ones with keywords that entice visitors to follow the link to your site are even better. However, there is something called "co-occurrence". This would be the keywords found around, not in, your anchor text. This is something like LSI (latent semantic indexing) keywords; only the keywords that you use here are going to be top-class main keyword types and are best utilized when you can use them to tell the search engines what your site is all about.

4. Focus on the page, not the site

Reputation of the site is not immaterial, but you gain as much authority as the page you are going to be on. Make yourself familiar with the site and its audience, and the kind of post that gets most comments and write accordingly to figure on a high authority/PR page.

Check out also the site owner's social media profiles. See if they have enough followers or subscribers. You want to reach a wider audience; unless the person is well connected, that may not happen.

5. Cross linking

Create profiles on different social media sites (several of the same, real profile, not creepy ones that change your mugshot or distort your name). Link your guest article to other guest posts of yours and your profiles and vice versa - leave no stone unturned to create a mesh of links around your web-presence. Since you are not creating the mesh with dime a dozen autoblogs or article directories, your links will count.

6. Sometimes, promote your guest posts, not your site

This is not missing the point at all. What you are aiming at here is author reputation. Google +1, Facebook likes, etc, actually lead to social endorsement that Google values. So, what actually happens is that when you are promoting your post, the parent site being high authority (why else would you guest post there?) lends credence to your reputation as an author. And when people try to find out more about you, voila! - they get to know of your site! This is actually as simple as it sounds. When it begins to work for you, remember we told you first.

7. Get organized

You will be able to make use of the earlier points only when you know where you guest-posted, what your subjects were, if you are going to post again, if you got a better idea over one you had last year on a given topic and so on. Have all the data regarding your activities in a spread sheet so that you don't end up sending duplicate posts to a number of blog owners. It will also put things in perspective for you; show you your progress or the lack of it.

Apart from these 7 tips, it helps to find a niche along your own to guest post. However, this is not absolutely necessary, since you can be naturally interested in and expert in several different topics and since the reputation factor is viewed separately by Google even though it is ultimately going to give you SEO benefits.

11 Backlink Strategies That May Put Your Online Business In Trouble

Backlinks
Link building is becoming a very important (actually the most important) aspect of SEO. However, not all links are good for your website. Google recently introduced stiff measures to deal with people who use unscrupulous ways to boost PageRank. This move is, no doubt, bound to affect all who don't play by the backlinking rules. Talking about backlinks, here are some 11 mistakes to avoid like a plague.

1. Paid Links

Buying and selling links is normally seen as unnatural because there are hidden motives aside from user experience for either of the websites involved. This includes buying content that contains links or sending a "free" product to somebody in exchange for them including a link to your site in their future write-ups. So steer clear from this short-cut.

2. Unnatural Links are a plague

Please take good note of the word "unnatural". It is all right to link to other sites and have them link back to you, but it must be natural. Natural links are simply links that add value to your visitors. If you are a law firm, don't try to exchange links with a dolphin research company.

3. Avoid bulky content, add value instead

Publishing articles and guest posts in bulk is no longer fashionable. In fact if you do guest articles just to gain keyword rich backlinks, your site might just get penalized. The rule of the thumb here is to ensure that you're publishing posts on other websites if you have something valuable to share.

4. Avoid automated links

There are many tools out there that claim to help you gain thousands of backlinks in very little time. Google's spam team is always after websites that use such services to hyper-inflate their authority on the net. You don't want to be caught using these services.

5. Careful about text ads

Text ads are a popular way to market products nowadays. However, if they don't use the rel="nofollow" attribute, Google is likely to mistake them for manipulative backlinks and therefore punish you.

6. Avoid ads and advertorials that contain links that pass PageRank

Always use link with the rel="nofollow" attribute if you pay for an ad or article. This will ensure that the ad does not pass link juice to your website therefore keeping you safe from a possible penalty.

7. Avoid over-optimization

If you're fond of publishing content that is full of links - all appearing to be anchor text - you could get a penalty. Google is now, more than ever, very strict on value addition as opposed to just optimization.

8. Avoid linking to low quality article directories

Linking to directories that will never send a single visitor your way is sheer waste of time. These links will not in any way favor your search rankings. Only link to directories that send visitors to your website and ignore the rest.

9. Footer links are a no-no

Avoid putting keyword rich links in your footer. Such links are counted as "bad" in Google's rulebook and are therefore to be avoided at all cost. This however does not include links to the "about us" or "privacy" but rather links like "buy followers" or "visit our shop".

10. Be cautious when using widgets

If you normally use free widgets to market your website, you should be sure to use the nofollow attribute so the link does not appear spammy. Google does not like links that are embedded in such platforms and may punish you for them if you don't use the rel="nofollow" attribute. If a widget developer offers you a chance to market on their platform, try to avoid using links (only when this is not logically possible should you resort to rel="nofollow" attribute).

11. Avoid forum comments that are optimized

If you are fond of using online tools to post comments on forums then you're likely to get a Google punishment in the event that such comments are unnaturally written or abnormally optimized. So, be sure to always post the comments yourself.

The writing is clearly written on the wall

Google does not like artificial or bulky links. You definitely don't want to lose the authority that you've spent years building due to a backlink slap. To get good links that help you to achieve and sustain exponential growth, it is imperative to play by these eleven rules.

We wish you all the best in everything you do.

How HTML5 Can Help With SEO

HTML5 and SEO
HTML 4.01 has been in use for almost 10 years now, until recently when HTML5 morphed out of it as the new standard for website content and functionality, and it continues to evolve ever since then. Latest web browsers like Safari, Chrome, IE and Firefox have adapted well to this latest web standard and continue to make their latest versions adapt to its features.

HTML5 has a number of elements that help online marketers to carry out effective SEO by way of its technical enhancements and improved features. It is however important for them to understand in detail, why does HTML5 matter for their SEO efforts.

To start with, here is how HTML5 can help with SEO:

1. New Semantic Tags and Geolocation Microdata Elements

HTML5 has new elements to offer that enable a better structure of the site viz. header tags, article tags and nav tags. You can make search engines understand and index simple content such as ratings/reviews, company events, people and products by using Geolocation Microdata.

SEO benefits: The cleaner code enables webpages to be efficiently searched and indexed. Also, the download time for webpages decreases significantly. Google identifies and presents the information in a better manner by virtue of the rich snippets generated by webmasters with the help Microdata.

2. New Media Elements

HTML5 brings along a new standard for multimedia content without the need for a plugin by a third party vendor. For instance, playing audio or video on a webpage had no set standard practice until HTML5 came into being. Generally, third party plugins such as flash are required to play audio and video files, however same plugins are not shared by all browsers. By using HTML5, you can directly build videos into browsers that support it and enable fast video downloads.

SEO benefits: Search engines better index and search HTML5 videos. Videos are ultra-fast and are browser based. Also, slower internet connections can have a better browsing experience without video buffering since the downloading and playing both take place in HTML5.

The independence from a third party vendor's plugin makes HTML5 more companionable with mobile gadgets which classically have restricted memory resources. The benefit of this video element for SEO is due to the fact that you can do away with much coding in order to be able to set in the video. Also, the video tag enables a search engine crawler to be more discerning as to what is this code for.

3. Canvas Element

This is a new pixel based graphic area that enables drawing charts, graphics and graphic visuals on a webpage.

SEO benefits: It provides greater stability as compared to a plugin since the browser includes the Canvas.

4. Local Client Side Storage

Cookies have not proved to be the right solution for storing huge volumes for data since every request forwards them to the server making it unproductive and sluggish. HTML5 uses data only when called for and it does not practice passing data on every server request. Data is stored and accessed using Javascript. This storage function benefits web apps and emails the maximum.

SEO benefits: You can leave the website's performance unaffected even after storing large amounts of data.

5. Form Elements

The forms have been equipped with more variety and functionality viz. date, time, URL, email, calendar, search etc.

SEO benefits: These new form options provide better design and functionality on mobile devices.

6. Multi-tasking capabilities through Web Workers

HTML5 has made web browsers capable of multitasking through Web Workers. The benefit of a feature as Web Worker is that the browser does not get locked up even when several processes are operating in it. Javascript used in the past could not even handle heavy computing. Scripts that would run for long also used to get timed out. The features of Web Workers are somewhat similar to the traditional Java or C# multi-threaded applications. Two of the uses that Web Workers come handy for are doing exhaustive numerical calculations and updating client-side databases.

SEO benefits: Web Workers give a greater flexibility to the developer in separating the content from code intended for processing tasks.

The above mentioned features of HTML5 and the SEO benefits that they bring along bear enough testimony to the fact that HTML5 is the new standard in markup for presenting webpages.

Strategies For Finding Guest Posting Opportunities

Guest Posting
Guest posting is a great way to build relevant inbound links to your website which contributes to about 80% of what you can do to improve your SEO rankings. It is important to mention that on-page SEO is about 20% of what you can do to rank your site organically.

Guest posting in some cases is also referred to as guest blogging. It is one of the best ways to build authority to your site. However, identifying the best guest posting opportunities for link development strategy is the most difficult part. You can build credibility around your site by guest posting or guest blogging on the most credible locations or guest blogging sites.

When you are starting a site from scratch, it is rare to get an audience. However, you shouldn't find this a problem anymore if you use the following best strategies to find the best guest posting or guest blogging opportunities.

Search engines

This is one of the quickest and most intuitive ways to finding relevant guest posting opportunities related to your website's niche. It is for this reason that you should make Google and other big search engines your great friends. Once you find the relevant guest blogging locations you are looking for, it is very vital that you check if they have a well-established guest post system. You can do this by checking if they've ever accepted guest posts in the recent past. Ignore guest blogging sites that lack the history of accepting guest posts.

You can also check out the advanced Google blog search bar if you can't find the best guest posting location using the traditional Google search bar. This is quite simple because it involves searching for your primary keywords with quotations like "write for us", "submit guest post" and "submit an article" etc.

Leveraging social media

Once you have exhausted all the advanced search engine queries mentioned earlier, social media can be your best option to turn to. It mainly involves looking for friends on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter who have guest blogging sites relevant to your site's niche. For instance, you can do this by typing and scanning for the keyword on twitter directories like Twellow and Wefollow. This gives you a pretty good list of people who have guest posting sites you can actually put your guest post. Leveraging with social media is the only way to find influencers around a specific topic relevant to your niche.

Spy on your competitors

This is one of the best strategies you can use to find the best guest posting opportunities used by your competitors. However, majority of people are not willing to fully exploit this strategy. Check on your competitor's backlinks with SEO tools and sites like Majestic SEO, Open Site Explorer or backlinkwatch.org. This mainly entails analysis of successful guest posting opportunities used by your competitors. Spying on your competitors is indeed a great strategy to gain additional backlinks with a little effort.

Blog directories

Blogging is the most raging activity online these days. Quite a large number of blogs offer free guest posting opportunities even if you don't have to advertise them. If you can tap into existing blog directories then, make an inquiry with some blogs regardless of whether they advertise or not. If you want to concentrate solely on your website's niche then, look for specific blog directories using search engines like Google.

Leveraging previous guest posts

You can leverage on your previous guest posts by using them as a billboard to advertise your inbound links. Also, mention your availability for guest opportunities by interacting with your commenters. Interacting with your commenters can create an opportunity for you to rub shoulders with the followers who have blogging sites relevant to your niche. This is one big opportunity to grow your audience and a network. The bottom line is: even if you have worked with a blog in the past, take the entire guest post opportunities you can get.

Tell people

This is one rare strategy employed by a few website owners seeking guest posts on other blogging sites. You should put into consideration the fact that one of your visitors could be a blogging website owner who is willing to let you guest post on their sites. Bloggers are always looking for quality content to add to their blogging sites, your guest post might be one of them.

5 Helpful Tips To Recover From Recent Penguin Update

Google Penguin
It cannot be denied that millions of websites were severely affected by recent Penguin update. Google's Penguin move is viewed as evil by thousands of web owners and bloggers all over cyberspace. On the contrary, it is also a positive although stringent approach to clean sites that have been filled with spammy articles and have used keyword stuffing deliberately to achieve page rankings. It's time to go back to the drawing board and start a new using these 5 helpful tips to recover from recent penguin update.

1. Create unique and viral content

This is your first step to rehabilitation which involves producing quality content that can go viral. Linkbaiting using catchy phrases can help generate organic traffic for your site. In order to be viral, you must know trends and latest updates on the niche you promote. Google will certainly appreciate the natural growth of your web pages. Remember, Google doesn't rank websites, it ranks pages so ensure quality content for each page.

2. Clean your site by removing bad links

It is impossible to remove all bad links but you can minimize them. Links that connect you to bad sources diminished your site's reputation; hence, this also tells you to be more cautious with link building next time. You can also use tools that help you trace outbound and inbound links. Even spammy comments and posts by bloggers on your site must be removed.

3. Promote guest blogging

Search for sites similar to yours which have high reputation. Try to invite these bloggers to guest blog on your site. It would also be wonderful to do the same for them to establish authority and attract new leads. Plus, you can build new relationships that can give your site more leverage. Make sure that your content offers something new or fresh to the audience.

4. Create variety for your anchor text

Get more creative and do your homework on keywords. Research on high value keywords with low or medium competition. Make sure that these keywords are highly relevant to each page on your site. Redundant use of phrases will definitely put you on a bad light. Yesterday's practice was over optimization of sites that involved high keyword density. Today, Google's Penguin says "less is more".

5. Look for high-quality directories for link building

There are tons of reputable directories for article submission like Ezine that can promote your site well. Niche directories and blog directories should also be your target. Keep an eye on incoming links to your site because the sources matter. You can also try government or educational institutions for quality link building although it's a long shot goal.

Aside from the given tips, there are still many pitfalls to avoid. But as a general rule, you can play safe by creating your site for people not for algorithm purposes. When readers love your content, products, or services, you can generate massive amount of traffic. You can also explore social media networking for establishing business relationships and positive online presence. Recovering from Penguin update is not really that difficult as long as you're willing to make some changes.
