Commerce Journalism AKA Affiliate Marketing

Commerce Journalism
As a marketing concept, affiliate links have always had a slightly disreputable feel to them. Adding an affiliate link to content always suggests, at some level, the publisher is more interested in getting paid than providing quality content. At the same time, trusted and authoritative content can move significant traffic through affiliate links, so plenty of marketing strategies focus around affiliate sales.

What's a marketing tactic to do when it falls under a cloud? Well, it falls back on another time honored marketing trick - it changes its name. What was once affiliate marketing is now known as commerce journalism, a name which spawns its own controversies.

Defining Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a subsection of native advertising, although the strategy has a history much longer than the native advertising name. Native advertising describes any marketing which blends with the surrounding content.

Affiliate marketing specifically describes links to sponsors or products within content. An image of a Mustang and a link to Ford parts are both native advertising, but only the link is considered affiliate marketing.

Can Journalism Advertize and Still be Journalism?

Commerce journalism works well enough as a replacement term for affiliate marketing, but the expression puts many people's noses out of joint. At its core, pure journalism is both trustworthy and credible.

Yeah, I know a quick flick through the newsstand or cable news networks reveals how rarely we see pure journalism, but in an ideal world, you should be able to trust the people who provide you with information.

Of course, it's more difficult to trust content containing sponsored links, or when a company pays a writer to produce articles about them. That's not journalism, detractors cried - that's marketing, and calling it anything else is misleading.

Google News and Commerce Journalism

It would be easy enough to dismiss the commerce journalism debate as mere semantics. After all, most commerce journalism doesn't pretend to be real news stories. A gulf of intentions separates a news story from content on a commercial page.

Expect, of course, sometimes the gulf narrows, especially when a canny marketer sees an opportunity. Marketing masquerading as news became so common, the practice goes against Google News' quality guidelines. Affiliate links in Google News articles will attract the unwanted gaze of Google's penalties, which no one wants.

Commerce Journalism or Commerce Content?

Given concerns about journalistic content and the nature of affiliate links, the term commerce content might have raised fewer eyebrows. Most readers expect some monetization in their online content. Readers aren't stupid; they understand bloggers and website owners need to eat. Still, "commerce journalism" was the term coined, so marketers are just going to have to live with it (at least until the concept receives another name change).

Succeeding in Commerce Journalism

Ultimately, your readers probably won't mind commerce journalism, as long as you strive to provide them with trustworthy and accurate information. Building trust takes time. Readers need time to assimilate, test and verify your content, although they may not be aware they're doing it.

As you build trust and authority in your field, you start building a social community based around your content. Once you have a large enough community, you'll start to see traffic through affiliate links.

Honesty is important in commerce journalism. If a company sponsors content, be upfront with your readers. You may not need to give them a heads up about affiliate links within content, but when money changes hands for an entire article, a disclaimer helps build your readers trust (and makes them more likely to click on links, as you've proven you're not hiding anything.

Most importantly, commerce journalism provides content and information first, and market opportunities second. Obvious advertising copy drives off readers. Give them useful information so they keep coming back, and eventually they'll check out your affiliate links.

Guide To Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing
Whether you are adding affiliate links to an existing website or you are planning on building a website based around an affiliate program, affiliate marketing is an easy way to monetize your website.

If you are unfamiliar with the term, affiliate marketing is when a merchant offers a commission to members of their affiliate program each time a sale was referred from their website. Not only does affiliate marketing work with sales, but leads and other types of programs are available as well. Here is one examples of an affiliate website:

e-smoke-reviews.com

This electronic cigarette review website earns a commission for each sale that is sent to each individual e-cigarette company. Read below to find out how you can take advantage of affiliate programs and earn more money on your website.

Establish a Network

With the increase in social media platforms over the recent years, it has been more complicated to establish a presence and maintain a network on every one, but it does make it easy to get your website in front of people. Start with the most common social media platforms. I would recommend Facebook, Google+, Twitter and Pinterest as a good place to start.

The people in your network are your fans as well as the customers who will make you money from the affiliate program. Whatever your site is about, it is important to keep the content tailored to your readers' interests. This will not only keep them coming back for more information, but they will also be more likely to share things with their friends who have similar interests. This allows your network to keep growing and once you have started, it is important to keep the momentum going. The content on your website is what is going to be shared by your readers and others will only be interested if they see your site producing content that is of high quality.

Website

The quality of your website will greatly affect your ability to be successful. Also, your website does not have to be designed by an expert for it to be of high quality. A quality website will be one that uses a clean layout, is easy to navigate and can have specific information found easily by your readers. Along with those things, it is important to make sure that your website converts traffic into sales.

Affiliate programs use links on your website to track where a customer comes from so that you can receive commission on the sale. The placement of your affiliate links is another large factor in the success of your website. Every website is going to have a different purpose and there is no right or wrong spot to place affiliate links. You want the affiliate links to be in areas where your readers will click. Many affiliate programs offer their affiliates banners and other types of links that may work better for you. For example, if you do not want a random link on a certain page, you may opt to put a banner for your affiliate program in the sidebar. This way the reader is not distracted and turned off by your site because they are overwhelmed with links and advertisements that take away from the purpose of the website. Your readers are an important part to your success and you will need to keep them happy to see continued success. Again, one well placed link will be more beneficial than multiple links that take away from what made the website popular in the first place.

Like a website plastered with advertisements, a site with a large amount of affiliate links might come off as "spammy" and distract readers from your content. You need to balance the amount of affiliate links between having enough that they will be clicked and not cluttering the pages on your website.

Promotion

So now your website is set up with affiliate links and conversions are starting to come in. Now the next step is to promote your website further and continue to build your network to gain more readers. There are multiple ways to promote your website. Hopefully, you are producing excellent content and your readers are sharing it with others. This will give you more exposure without doing any more work and your site will gain new fans organically.

People who do not have any friends sharing your content are still potential customers and need a way to find your website. This is where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes into play and will be an integral part to growing your business. With effective SEO, targeted keywords will result in your website being ranked higher on the major search engines. Using the e-cigarette website above as an example, "e-cigarette reviews" is a keyword that I would like my website to be ranked for. This will allow people who are looking for certain information to find the things they are looking for on my website. By having an effectively optimized website, your business will be more likely to grow as new people will consistently be finding your website.

Different websites are built for different reasons and the promotion and marketing should reflect that. While every website needs to be optimized to rank well in search engines, there are other ways in which you can promote your website. The different social media platforms will also be an effective way to promote your website. The different social media networks each give different advantages and it is up to you to choose what to put your time into. A website selling art may be better off using Pinterest because they can show pictures of the art they are selling and have other people see it more than on something like Twitter. While this may work for an art website, a mostly content based website may benefit more from using Twitter and tweeting new posts and articles because images are not a main focus of the website.

The marketing of your website is important to keep your business going. This needs to be done through changing the way your pages are set up to rank higher in search engines, as well as in different areas of the Internet and other mediums. Again, having people share your content on their own is also important. Finding what is working most effectively will allow you to know where you need to put your efforts. Using different analytic tools will further enhance your ability to market your website.

Software

Your website has now been operating for some time now. You have exhausted your initial marketing strategies and are continuing to provide your readers with quality content. Many people in this stage find themselves lost and do not know where to go next to continue growing their business. The next step to the process is finding out what is effective and how you can refine your marketing strategy to make your site operate more efficiently. This can be done by analyzing data and how users interact with your website through the use of different analytic tools.

Free analytics software such as Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools should be set up in the beginning when building your site. While these tools are set up from the start, it will take some time for them to collect useful data from your website.

If your site has been operating with the analytics tools mentioned above, you will eventually see how users are interacting with your site along with all of the links to your website on other sites. Keywords that your website comes up for will be available for you to view. This will help when adding new content to your websites and allow you to know which keywords to target depending on your strategy. Once you are in this part of the process it is up to you how you use the data available. Different websites' goals will depend on the importance of different data. By looking at how your users are interacting with your site can provide you with valuable information to further enhance your success.

Learn The Key Formula That Makes An Affiliate Marketing Business Successful

Affiliate Marketing
Have you ever heard of people making money online? I have to say that when I first heard that I thought that it could be possible, but that money online was reserved for those big companies like eBay or Amazon. It was until a few months later that I learned that these internet corporations are not only earning great money, but also they are willing to share it with the average person like you and me if we simply help them to make a sale.

My name is Jose Lozano and I am an affiliate working with RC flying toys such as the F18 RC jet plane. I want to share with you how the affiliate marketing business can sky rocket your success and get you as high as the original version of the jet that I just mentioned.

Affiliate marketing is awesome; those who are current affiliates know that the power of this business relies in the fact that it drives passive income to your pocket, and even when the average commission is around 4% to 6%, this business allows you to earn that single commission multiple times a day. There are people in this business who make 5 sales a day, and there are other people who make 150 sales a day; if they sell a product that costs 100 Dollars, just do the maths and you will know that those are 20 to 600 Dollars a day; you may think that I am exaggerating here but the sweet reality is that I am not.

The opportunity on the affiliate marketing business is growing faster and faster each year, and the numbers of affiliates who are becoming super affiliates (those who make a lot of sales) are going up as well. It is not rare to know about someone who is making a healthy income from the internet these days, and the good news are that these guys are the average people; the skills that are required to run a business like these are not many and actually you don't have to go to college to learn how to make money online.

Get to know both sides of the coin - What are the risks as an Affiliate Marketer

This is a very important thing to explore, everything in life is a risk, and it is fair that you know what the downside of this business is. There are some challenges that you may face in order to make your online business a success story; I would like to give you some details about two of the major ones that I found when I first started, as well as my own advice to overcome these obstacles.

  • Not believing in your business: Most people fail in this business because they have doubts about it and don't have a trusted source of information to answer their questions. The most common doubts that people have are:

    - What skills are required to run an online business?
    - How long does it take to make money online?
    - How long would it take to replace my current income?

These are all great questions with a simple answer: it depends; the skills that you need to run an online business depend on the type of business that you want to run, don't worry for the technical side; that is the last thing you have to think about unless you want to run a website about technical skills. About the money questions, it will depend on how good you are to apply the key formula to achieve success as an affiliate. I will share this formula with you in a moment so keep reading.

  • The "Get Rich Quick" solution: Some people make money online by cheating others about this whole idea of "Making Money Online", they sell junk products with the promise that your business will run on autopilot, and that one day magically you will wake up and see your bank account full of money. The truth is that this business is like any other business and it requires work in order to reap the benefits. Ask this to any serious affiliate and they will tell you the same thing, so don't fall into those scams that will only slow your way to success.

What is the secret to make money online? - Traffic + Conversion, the formula for success

Let's keep it simple here. Imagine a store where lots of good and high quality products are offered to the public, this business is nice, looks good, smells well, is in the best location and the prices are very low; this amazingly assembled store could be your website, well designed, with the best software, best products and the best content for everyone; but none of that will make you money if no one is visiting your store, you need people getting in so you can make sales; on the internet this is known as traffic. Now imagine that you have a lot of traffic, people is visiting your website constantly and now you are full of men and women watching your content and reviewing your products, but that doesn't make you money either, you need that the people who is visiting your site is actually interested in the products you offer, otherwise you won't make any sales and you will have no money. When a sale is made that is called conversion. In order to have conversion you have to have traffic first, then you can start measuring your traffic versus your conversion and make adjustments to increase conversions.

Some of the scams that are offered on the internet to help you make money are traffic based, and they promise to send you tons of traffic to your site or offer so you can convert, but think about it for a second and you will see that you need targeted traffic, and that targeted traffic is the one that actually converts. Targeted traffic means to have people on your site that is actually looking for the products you offer.

A piece of advice to start your Affiliate Marketing Business

My recommendation in order to learn how to get traffic and increase your conversions is to find a mentor, learn from people who are actually earning a living out of the internet, understand that making money online is easy and fast if you do the right work, it can be one of the bests experiences you have in your life. Remember this: You will be paid in direct proportion to the value you deliver according to the marketplace. That is known as the law of income, and it is shared by a very rich gentleman and coach by the name of T. Harv Eker, so you want to make sure you deliver value to your targeted audience through your affiliate marketing business.

What other risks can you identify about this business? If you are an affiliate, what other tips can you share with us? To your Online Success!

What Does Panda Mean For Affiliate Marketing?

Google Panda
Google's updates are a topic of conversation on every affiliate forum, and the recent Panda update is no exception. Affiliate sites are more vulnerable to Panda's effects, and some have lost up to 95% of their organic Google traffic in just a month's time.

Here, you'll learn more about the Panda update, and what you as an affiliate marketer can do to counteract its effects.

Just What is Panda?

Panda is a search algorithm update meant to further distinguish quality sites from lower-quality ones. Its goal is to provide the search engine's users with useful and relevant results. If an affiliate doesn't add anything to their site other than the information provided by the product's supplier, they will see adverse effects on their ranking when Panda's criteria are applied.

You can tell if a ranking drop is Panda-related through its timing. If a drop in organic traffic coincides with a Panda update, then it's likely related and you'll need to find out which pages and keywords are impacted. It's also a good idea to read Google's guidelines to ensure your affiliate sites aren't doing anything that may mean a penalty.

Website Ranking Criteria and Response

Many affiliate sites are run single-handedly, or by smaller teams that don't have a way to continually supply quality, unique content. There aren't any shortcuts in this area; if you see your web traffic drop, you need to do something! Now's not the time for a "one size fits all" approach, but there are some things that affiliate sites have in common, as well as some things you need to avoid:

  • Duplicate content: If content is lifted directly from other sites, red flags will go up and little value will be added to your site visitors' experience. If your site uses content from another source, it should be edited, rewritten (Copyscape is a good way to check for plagiarism) and made relevant to your niche. It's not only fair, it's good business practice.

  • Thin content: If an affiliate site doesn't produce content that's "valuable" by Google's standards and its sole purpose is to make money, it's called a thin affiliate. The guidelines used to review sites are very explicit here; those guidelines aren't directly related to Panda, but many of its specifications apply to the algorithm. If your affiliate sites contains "thin" content, it should be augmented and rewritten so that it adds value for site users.

  • Higher bounce rates/page views: When a site is visited and the user then clicks the "back" button to return to the results page, that tells Google that the site isn't what the user was looking for. To avoid bounces, build affiliate pages that compel the user to stay around.

  • Being blocked by users: If your site shows up in Google's search results and a good number of users choose to block it, your ranking will be negatively impacted. Conversely, if users bookmark your site or use the +1 button, Google is told that your site has something to offer. To avoid being blocked, make sure you're offering fresh, helpful and relevant content.

  • High ad content: Affiliate sites with a higher than normal ad:content ratio have a higher likelihood of a negative impact from Panda. If you need ads on your site, keep them to a reasonable size and put them "below the fold".

  • Using templates: Gone are the days when you could lay out a template and use paid search campaigns to gain traffic. If your affiliate site uses a template, be sure to regularly add new, targeted content.

While the recent Panda update can hurt some affiliate marketers, it can offer an enormous opportunity to those which have added value and a purpose beyond profit. Your challenge as a marketer is to seize the opportunity you've been given. Think of your target audience and the kind of content they want to see, and your site will stand out from the rest.

7 Best Affiliate Marketing Promotional Methods

Affiliate marketing is a well-known and relatively easy concept. It's a marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each customer brought about by the affiliate's own marketing efforts.

While the theory of affiliate marketing is simple, it's not an easy task to market affiliate products successfully. Most affiliate marketers typically only earn a few dollars of supplemental income a month; however the more experienced marketers earn well over six figures a month.

To become one of the top affiliate marketers making that much money you're going to have to decide how you are going to promote your affiliate product. To be successful, you need to refer customers to the affiliate website. To do this you need to select a way to promote them. There are number of ways to promote a product. Some are totally free and others might be somewhat costly. Here is a list of the 7 best affiliate marketing promotional methods:

PPC - The most popular fashion of promoting affiliate products. With PPC you bid on relevant keywords related to the product you are trying to market. PPC is not as easy as just writing an ad with a few choice keywords and leaving it at that - this will not get you any sales. To really excel at PPC you must be fairly familiar with how AdWords works and most importantly you must track everything to determine what keywords are generating conversions for you and what aren't.

SEO - Another popular method of promoting affiliate products but also the most difficult is Search Engine Optimization. SEO is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. SEO doesn't bring results instantly but it can be extremely rewarding in the long run.

Coupon - The recession has seen the way that customers shop online change. Savvy shoppers know there is often a discount to be had by shopping online and will conduct searches geared towards finding these discounts. With that being said there are many coupon type websites that promote affiliate products. This is by far the fastest gainer in terms of popularity and success for affiliates.

Incentive/Loyalty - As mentioned before with the change in how consumers shop online, Incentive and Loyalty websites have popped up where they share a portion of their affiliate earnings with users in the form of a reward, such as miles, points, cash, donations to a charity, or merchandise.

Email - This is the best way to stay in touch with people. Even just a monthly newsletter is a good internet marketing promotion.

Social Media - Social media is the hottest sector on the Internet right now and only getting bigger and more powerful. This means, as an affiliate, you need to be actively using social media sites to promote yourself and your websites/blogs. Here are some practical ideas for using Social Media to enhance your affiliate marketing efforts.

Website/Content - Affiliates who develop and publish content (such as news, information, reviews, or some other area of interest) to a destination website.

What affiliate marketing promotional methods have you seen or what has worked the best for you? Every vertical and every site is different so the methods could change depending on what you market. It all comes down to making sure the traffic you generate is targeted enough to make the sale!

NOTE: If you publish content and you're looking for a simple way to earn money from your blog or website, try using the content monetisation service VigLink which makes affiliate marketing very easy for bloggers and website owners. Top 5 Traffic Sources

Here's a great article from Titus Hoskins, explaining what are the top sources to drive traffic to your site...

5 Top Traffic Sources For Your Site

I believe if you asked any webmaster or online marketer what their most important aspect of running a site would be, you would get an answer that's some way related to traffic. Mainly because traffic is your site's lifeblood, actually without traffic you really don't have a site at all.

Traffic is King

Traffic brings in the leads and the sales. Quality traffic is what produces your online revenue, whether from advertising or from sales on your site. Now, I have sites which get less than 50 visitors a day, I have a few sites which get around 200 visitors and I have one site which gets around 2,000 visitors a day.

Don't jump to any conclusions, some days the site getting 50 visitors can make just as much as the site getting 2,000 visitors. It all has to do with the quality of the traffic and how well it converts into a sale. And of course, it all depends on what you're selling... an LCD cleaning kit for $20 bucks or a gaming laptop which sell for $2000+.

Regardless, you have to get that traffic in the first place if you want to earn an online income. The more traffic you have, usually, the more you will make; at least this has been my experience. Since traffic is very important to me, I keep a lot of records and stats on where my traffic is coming from on the web. I have to know what produces the quality traffic and how to get it.

So below I have listed down my 5 most important traffic sources and/or the marketing techniques I use to get that traffic. This list might also help you with your traffic and how you can grow it. Here are my 5 main traffic sources...

1. SEO and the Search Engines

The majority of the traffic to my sites comes from the search engines, mainly Google. It is my high rankings for my targeted keyword phrases which brings in the most and the best quality traffic to my sites. Get the SEO right and build a lot of quality one-way links from related sites and you will get the traffic. Another tactic, don't just create a website with only 10 or 20 pages - create one with 1000 to 5000 pages. I know this takes time but consider your site like a long-term business which you will keep building for years. Produce plenty of quality content and you will get plenty of quality visitors in return. Works for me.

2. Article Marketing

Another very effective way to bring in quality traffic to your site or sites is article marketing. Just write short articles related to your site's keywords and place your keyworded links in the resource box. Distribute these articles all over the web. Right now, what is working for me, is writing unique articles which I only place on one important site. I am using this technique with sites like SiteProNews, Buzzle and many more. Article marketing is still one of the most effective ways to get quality traffic, just try it.

3. PPC - Pay Per Click Advertising

I know, I know, this can be very expensive, but PPC can be the quickest way to get quality traffic to your sites. Just be careful and approach it with kid's gloves until you find campaigns which work for you - then scale them up. Microsoft Adcenter and Yahoo Marketing have now joined forces and I find this is producing good traffic for me. Google Adwords is probably better, but they are a real pain to work with and have become too expensive, at least for my keywords. But if you have the resources, don't rule out Adwords or any of the PPC programs.

4. Social Media Sites

From Facebook to Twitter to LinkedIn, social media sites can provide a lot of traffic and word of mouth advertising for your site. For me, even though I haven't worked these sites to their fullest potential, I still get traffic from them. Getting your pages bookmarked in some of these sites can bring in a flood of traffic overnight, while most of this traffic will be temporary, you can get a lot of sign-ups to your newsletter and different follow-up lists. While not exactly in the same group, I have had some success with YouTube videos which also bring in targeted traffic. Don't ignore these social media and video sites in your traffic strategies.

5. Email Marketing and Follow-up Lists

This is another one of my major sources of "repeat visitors" to my sites. You must be constantly building up your different contact lists for further follow-up. This will bring in more visitors than you would expect, especially if you put some simple viral messages in your emails. If you supply valuable information, people will recommend your content to friends and co-workers; again word of mouth can bring in a lot of traffic especially in this age of Facebook and Twitter.

Of course, there are other traffic sources such as Press Releases, Banner Ads, RSS Feeds, Off-line Advertising... and if you have your products to promote, affiliates and joint ventures will be your most valuable source of traffic. Over the years I have picked up a lot of information on traffic and traffic tips... some of the best places/people for this has been:

freetraffictip.com - run by Tinu Abayomi-Paul, one of my best sources for free traffic tips. Excellent.

trafficology.com - this site and newsletter gives you off-beat ways to build traffic to your site. Highly Recommended.

trafficsecrets.com - if this one is still open, John Reese has a few very good products on traffic. Recommended if you can afford it.

Top 10 Affiliate Marketing Tips

Here are my top 10 affiliate marketing tips to help you figure out how to identify profitable affiliate marketing opportunities and avoid the ones that are a total waste of time and money.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #1: Choose Quality Products

You must remember that when you promote affiliate products on your website, every recommendation you make reflects directly on you. If you recommend a good-quality affiliate product or service that is reasonably priced, your customers and subscribers will trust you and be interested in future recommendations that you make.

… But if you recommend something that fails to live up to its claims, then your visitors are going to assume you're just another marketer who’s only trying to sell to them and your credibility will take a major hit.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #2: Try the Product First

Have you found an affiliate product you're interested in promoting? Then we strongly urge you to try it yourself first. It’s hard to offer an honest recommendation of a product or service you have no experience with. If you are really serious about joining a particular affiliate marketing program, we recommend that you do your homework first.

Try the product or service yourself. Talk to other people who have purchased it. Make sure that you are recommending a high-quality product that comes from a company that offers great customer service and is reputable enough to back up what they sell with a strong guarantee.

That’s the best way to ensure your visitors value your recommendations and come back for more.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #3: Hold Out for Generous Commissions

It’s perfectly reasonable for you to expect to be paid 20% to 50% of the profits on each product sold. If the company only offers 5% to 10%, we suggest you keep on looking. You should only do business with affiliate companies that understand the "lifetime value" of new customers you refer, and appreciate your efforts enough to offer the commissions you deserve.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #4: Look for a High Sales Conversion Ratio

Before you join a company's affiliate program, make sure the company's website is turning a reasonable number of visitors into sales. If their website doesn't have a decent conversion rate, then all the effort you put into directing traffic to their site will be wasted.

Look for sites that have at least a 1% conversion ratio (in other words, 1 out of every 100 visitors makes a purchase). Check out their website and their salescopy to see if it makes YOU want to buy. After all, it’s your job to send them targeted traffic — but it’s their job to turn these prospects into paying customers.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #5: Make Sure You’ll Get Credit for Every Sale

Before you join a company's affiliate program, find out what kind of tracking software they use. Look for a program that uses reliable affiliate tracking software that tracks all of your sales.

We emphasise "all" because you want to make sure that they track phone, fax, and snail-mail orders, as well as any that are made directly on the website. Many companies only track online orders — which means their affiliates don't get credit for anywhere from 5% – 10% of the sales they help the company make!

Also, make sure the affiliate program you join uses "cookie tracking". This ensures that you’ll be credited for the purchase made by people who don't buy on their first time to the site, but return to buy something on a future visit.

With cookie tracking, you can be sure that you are being credited for all of your affiliate sales… including online orders, mail orders, faxed orders, phone orders, and orders from customers who come back weeks or even months later.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #6: Make Sure They Offer Sales Statistics in Real Time

When you join an affiliate program, the company should give you a special username and password that you can use to access your own personal affiliate sales information on their website whenever you want. These should be real-time statistics that allow you to see exactly how many sales you have made.

This is important because real-time statistics allow you to see how well your promotions are doing. You can see…

  • How many visitors have clicked through from your site to theirs
  • How many of those visitors made a purchase
  • How many sub-affiliates you have
  • Your sales totals for that month and previous months

… plus a whole lot more!

With real-time statistics, you can discover exactly how well different banners, text links, and recommendations are doing. For example, you might discover after some testing that a banner on your resource page doesn't pull nearly as well as a personal recommendation under your newsletter subscription box.

That’s the kind of information you need to ensure that your affiliate marketing efforts are yielding maximum results.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #7: Make Sure They Offer Resources to Help You Generate Sales

A good affiliate program will provide you with everything you need to be successful. They'll provide you with traffic-generating banners, text links, and recommendation letter templates. They'll tell you which techniques work well in which circumstances.

Because their success is linked with yours, the affiliate program you join should be ready, willing, and able to teach you everything you need to know to start earning excellent commissions.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #8: Make Sure the Company Has a Good Reputation

This might seem obvious, but we can't help but stress the importance of doing business with a reputable company. We know many people who have worked really hard, made a lot of sales for a company, and then have never been paid (or have been forced to wait months and months to get their money).

If you have any questions or concerns about an affiliate marketing company, ask for references and do some checks on them. You want to make sure they are very professional before you join their program.

For example, if you phone them and they're rude to you, they put you on hold forever, or you get an answering machine, then you should be concerned that customers you refer to them will have similar experiences.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #9: Do NOT Sign An Exclusivity Clause

Before you join any affiliate program, read all contracts and agreements very carefully. Pay very close attention to exclusivity clauses in the agreement.

Some companies will stipulate that you only sell "their" affiliate products on your website and won't let you join other affiliate programs. For example, if you joined a book-selling program, they might state in their contract that you can only sell "their" books.

We strongly urge you NOT to sign any affiliate agreement or contract that restricts you like this. Otherwise you will be missing out new opportunities to make money on your affiliate site — and any company that denies your right to make more money doesn’t have your best interests at heart.

Affiliate Marketing Tips #10: Only Promote What's Relevant to Your Market

And here’s the big one – make sure the products you're recommending are products your niche market would want to buy! You could recommend Internet marketing materials on your fly-fishing site until you're blue in the face, but you’re not going to make any money, and you could even drive visitors away.

To be successful as an affiliate you should zero in on a niche market and give them valuable information that makes them trust you. Then you can recommend affiliate products that they would be interested in… and they'll respond.

To Your Success!
