Is Getting Listed On Technorati Worth The Effort?

Many blog owners will tell you that one of the main directories you should submit your blog to is Technorati. Getting your blog listed on Technorati once it's claimed can take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks but it's well worth the effort.

There is a problem however...

Back in February and March of this year, I had to change the domain for my blog due to problems with the free .co.cc domain and Facebook (see Related articles below). This change resulted in updating various directories of which I'm a member of with the new domain. With most of these directories, the change is immediate with the rest taking anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks to be manually approved.

Technorati have a different system however and one that doesn't work too well.

When you change the URL of your blog, you have to submit your new blog URL as a new listing on Technorati and claim it. Once it's claimed, you then have to inform the Technorati technical team using their temporary support system to transfer the authority (a kind of ranking system) from your old URL to the new URL.

I requested for the transfer of authority over 6 months ago (on the 14th March 2011) and after posting numerous messages over this time period, the authority from my old URL to my new URL has still NOT been transferred, even though I was given assurances back in April that this was in progress by their technical department. I've also been receiving a HTTP 500 Internal Server Error on my new URL during this time which basically means that my new blog URL is still not listed on their system. You can see this for yourself by visiting my Technorati profile and you will notice that derekjones.co is not listed.

I'm not saying that you should not list your new blog on Technorati but if you're thinking of changing anything on your current listing, you could be in for a long wait. Why is Technorati taking so long to approve blog changes? I'm not entirely sure but it's certainly very frustrating for us bloggers and something they need to look into and rectify immediately.

UPDATE 20th September 2011: After 6 months of waiting, Technorati's technical team have now finally transferred the authority and my new blog URL (derekjones.co) is now listed on their system. You can view the listing at: http://technorati.com/blogs/www.derekjones.co

UPDATE 23rd October 2011: I am pleased to announce that Technorati have finally changed their system to self-service and you can now update your blog URL (and feed URL) on your current listing without the need to go through the long and tedious process as mentioned above. To make changes, simply login to your Technorati account, click on the "Edit Site Info" button on your claimed blog listing and enter your new blog and/or feed URL.

To protect your blog, any changes to the blog or feed URL will include a verification process similar to that of the original claim process. Once the verification (claim) process has been completed, your listing will be updated and the authority from your old URL will automatically be transferred to your new URL.

MyBlogLog And The Power Of Bloggers

You may have heard the news that Yahoo! is sadly discontinuing the MyBlogLog service on the 24th May 2011. As a blogger, this is devastating news, especially if you have used MyBlogLog to build large communities which in return, generates a fair amount of traffic for your blog.

As a result of this news, I've just received an email from Antony Berkman of BlogCatalog informing me of a service and campaign that I'm sure you'll be interested in. Here's a copy of that email:

I am writing to you because there is a story that while it clearly does not rise to the same level of human tragedy, I believe strongly will make a major difference to the future of blogging.

Yahoo! recently announced the imminent shut down of MyBlogLog. While this news has been largely ignored by mainstream media, the event is disturbing because it shuts down a major channel of the blogosphere.

For years now MyBlogLog has been ignored by Yahoo! and now they are shutting it down because it doesn't fit within their corporate strategy.


What does MyBlogLog's closure mean to you?

• You may think it doesn't mean anything or even think whether they still exist, or whether you even have heard of them, the truth is that MyBlogLog is a valuable blogging network that distributes tens of millions of visitors to blogs each year.
  
  
• Yahoo! has shown no respect to bloggers throughout it's 4 year ownership of the site. Once again, they are failing to follow through on promises and responsibilities to bloggers. Perhaps Yahoo! believes it has no responsibility to bloggers.
  
  
• The closure of MyBlogLog represents a lack of respect to bloggers who have built tens of thousands of communities on the network and spent countless hours adding MyBlogLog widgets to their blogs.
  
  
• Yahoo! has made no attempt to dispose of MyBlogLog, yet it represents an important channel of distribution for blogs.

Why you should care?

BloggersUnite.org and BlogCatalog are ready, willing and able to take over MyBlogLog and turn MyBlogLog into a valuable tool for bloggers and blog readers. We shared our interest with Yahoo! over a year ago to do this. Yahoo! ignored our requests to talk to them, we had a brief conversation, they wanted to know our strategy for making the site more valuable and because we refused, their communications with us ended.


So, what difference will it make if I join this event?

The more members we have on BloggersUnite.org the greater the positive impact we can make to the world. A combination of BloggersUnite + MyBlogLog + BlogCatalog is "The Right Thing."

To-date, together with your help we have saved lives, made material differences in the lives of school kids, raised money for Haiti, helped build clean water wells in Africa, worked with the CDC to raise awareness about STDs, united refugees with their families, worked with Aids.gov to harness the power of the blogosphere on AIDS Awareness Day and we had hundreds of thousand of bloggers unite on Bloggers for Good Day; where bloggers from BloggersUnite were featured on CNN doing good deeds.

It makes little sense when people in this world are starving and dying because they lack clean water that Yahoo!, one of the largest technology companies in the USA, would shut down an asset that has value.

Why not sell it and give the money to a charity? Their site has value. As Warren Buffet says, "stupid in small things, stupid in big." I humbly ask that you please unite with thousands of other bloggers and explain to Yahoo! management what would be the "right thing" to do or add an Action Badge to your blog, or perhaps both.

To do this please click BloggersUnite because unlike Yahoo!, we are fully aware that when you combine your voice with the voice of other bloggers, that there is no greater force for good in the world today.

Blog and RSS Directories Update

I've just updated the Top Blog and RSS Directories post with new links. I have also added some additional Multi-Ping Services which you can use.

When using Multi-Ping Services, just be careful not to ping too often, as these services will ban you for over pinging. Rule of thumb is to ping only when you have published new content on your blog. Just as a reminder, I have added this note to the bottom of the original post.

With the Top Blog and RSS Directories post being updated frequently as and when new services become available, don't forget to bookmark so that you have access to the latest services.

Top Blog and RSS Directories

You've setup a blog, now what? It's time to promote it!

Since setting up this blog, I've spent hours searching the internet for high traffic blog and RSS directories to submit my blog and feed to.

To help you promote your blog and to save you the time searching, I've compiled a list of the internet's Top Blog and RSS Directories.

Most of these directories are free to submit to and only require you to enter a valid email address. Some require you to register before you can submit your blog or RSS feed. Any blog or RSS directories listed with an asterisk (*) require a fee or a reciprocal link to be placed on your site before they will list your blog or RSS feed.

In addition to the blog and RSS directories, you may be interested in joining the Facebook group I've recently setup for bloggers called the Bloggers Network.

The Bloggers Network is a group for bloggers to network with each other. Advertise your blog, post your latest blog posts, plus discuss anything to do with blogging. You can access the group by visiting:
